Now Open!

Sue Hunter and Carmen Alcalde, owners of bad dog frida, a pet accessories boutique, know people by their pets. Conversations with them typically include a mention of a customer and a funny story about said customer’s pet.

Alcalde once picked something out for a magazine photo shoot after I mentioned a coworker’s dog that was modeling. “Oh, this will look perfect on little Geordie,” enthused Alcalde as she handed me a little rain jacket that of course, we used. So, I guess you could add pet stylist to their repertoire, too. (Geordie is the terrier wearing the navy raincoat in the photo!)

Anyway, they've just opened the Re-Dog store which is a “store-within-a-store [that] offers a variety of gently used items for your dog,” according to a press release. The Re-Dog resale shop is open the first and third Sunday of every month from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (So that’s this Sunday, June 21, folks).

Customers can earn money when they bring in items that Fido doesn’t use, like leashes, collars or sweaters in good condition. Bad dog frida staff will give you cash for items. You can also shop Re-Dog and pick up items at a hefty discount. Everyone wins!

Dog Days

I’m a sucker for those lame-o celeb tabloids. A friend bought me a subscription to US Weekly for my birthday, and I occasionally pick up Life & Style or In Touch. Yes, I feel it necessary to know what is going on with The Hills crew or what jeans Rachel Bilson bought recently … or something. Ahem. What was I talking about again?
Ah, yes. You too, can have celebrity for a dog! Bad dog frida is holding a contest for dog owners to submit photos of their beloved fuzzy one for the chance to be featured on a custom label treat bag! Owners should submit ten dollars (which will be donated to the shop’s featured rescue group, Greyhound Pets of America) and a print photo (no digital files) by July 31. Photos should be labeled on back with your name, dog’s name and your contact information. Photos will not be returned.
The winner will receive five free bags of treats, ten percent off all future purchases of the treats and of course, people stopping you on the street to ask if they can have Ruf’s autograph. You’ll both be so cool, you’ll have to wear shades.

Congrats!

Local pet goods retailer bad dog frida received the Adoption Champion Award from Planet Dog. “The award supports, encourages and rewards Planet Dog retailers who ‘romp the extra mile’ when it comes to social responsibility, philanthropy and advocacy for pet adoption,” according to a press release.
The shop’s Collars for Canines Program last December gave cusomters ten percent off each collar and leash when they donated a collar and leash. Bad dog frida also makes a financial contribution to a specific rescue group every quarter.

Doggone Good News

bad dog frida is celebrating its one-year anniversary this Sunday, September 30, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. I’m sure owners Carmen Alcalde and Sue Hunter will have their five dogs on hand to celebrate their howling success.

The bright and cheery store was a welcome addition to the Atwood neighborhood that previously lacked a store with “really cool things for good dogs and their people.” Check out the celebration (the first fifty visitors score a goodie bag) and find twenty-five percent off most items in the store, raffle prizes and “tasty treats for dogs and humans!”

If you’re interested, read my column here or watch a Window Shopping TV segment on the bow-dacious shop.
