Prepster Chic

Recently, I popped into Steve & Barry’s University Sportswear at West Towne Mall to see if they had a sports team T-shirt. I took a quick look around and realized that this mass retailer’s merchandise mix has changed drastically: what used to be the go-to place for collegiate athletic gear has shifted focus, from carrying less collegiate gear and more basics: tees, Bermuda shorts, polo shirts and hoodies. Some of my thrifty, nifty picks: long-sleeve polos for a mere $5.50 (on sale), a sequined tee for $6.98, and an adorable girl’s classic cable-knit cardigan—a steal at $4.98! I’m also eagerly awaiting the launch of Sex and the City maven Sarah Jessica Parker’s line Bitten on June 7th. The line will feature basics like khakis, tanks and tops all under $19.95.
